2023-05-10 | The Road to Medazzaland

From Carsten Windhorst:
We are ready to launch the first part of The Road to Medazzaland.

Some of you may be aware that we have been working on a rather ambitious documentary project. It all started back in February 2022 with the idea to make a documentary on Medazzaland to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the album.
However, before we knew it the whole thing had snowballed into something much, much bigger and I personally felt that all the non Medazzaland footage we had shot was too good to be left on the cutting room floor. Let’s face it, interviewing Nile Rodgers is a dream come true for anyone (let alone a Duran fan) but what can he really say about Medazzaland…

By September 2022 we were sure we had got everything we needed to start putting the documentary together but (luckily) our ambition threw a spanner in the works and we decided to try and interview even more people.
By the time we filmed Erol Alkan in his studio we were sure we had now definitely interviewed everyone on our immediate wish list but then we started throwing even more names around and just over a week ago we sat down with Mr Hudson…
Anyway to cut a long story short, The Road to Medazzaland consists of two parts. Part 1 covers the period from 1980-1989, while part two will focus on 1990-1995.

As for the actual Medazzaland documentary - we are still working on it and we’ll keep you posted on our progress (I told you we were ambitious). For now I hope you’ll enjoy the first part of The Road to Medazzaland. Part two will follow soon.
We wrote, produced, filmed and edited the entire documentary ourselves. It’s been an extremely time consuming project and we hope you’ll enjoy it. The premiere is set for 8am UK time (9 May) which is midnight on the west coast.

2023-03-21 | Duran Duran to record a new album with Andy Taylor

Duran Duran have announced “a special new music project”, set for release later this year, which will feature “extended Duran Duran family and friends, old and new”, most notably the band’s former guitarist Andy Taylor who is terminally ill with stage 4 prostate cancer.

There’s clearly a sense of urgency around what would be an emotional reunion and Simon Le Bon is set to fly out to Andy’s home in Ibizia to record with his former bandmate.

While the band didn’t use the word ‘album’ in the post on their socials yesterday, John Taylor recently told The Mirror that “We’re working on an album right now that is going to be coming out at the end of the year and [Andy Taylor] is playing guitar. There’s a lot of cover songs on the album, songs meaningful to us when we were kids. So having him be a part of that project is great.”

There were rumours that Duran Duran planned to ‘finish’ Reportage with Andy in the near future, before the guitarist went public with his cancer diagnosis at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame last November. It’s conceivable that some of that material could end up as part of this new record, but that remains to be seen.

If this new album is indeed released in 2023 (not a given, going by previous proclamations), at worst it will be only 26 months since Future Past and would therefore be Duran Duran’s quickest follow up to a studio album since 1988’s Big Thing was issued less than two years after Notorious.

  • 2023-01-13 | Andy Taylor talks cancer battle

Taylor returns to his health battles for a new interview for U.K. TV, and explains how music and creativity has lifted his spirits.
The diagnosis came when Andy was 56 years old, and presented when he went jogging and felt what he describes as “arthritic sort of pain.” He began to “have these symptoms, and didn’t recognize them for what they could be.” Lumps would appear on his neck, a troubling sign that the cancer had metastasized. The biopsy results confirmed the worst, an illness he describes as “a death sentence.”

On hearing the extent of his illness, “no one can be prepared for that.”

Due to his poor health, Taylor missed the ceremony in Los Angeles, for which he’d planned to break out a new guitar.
Now that the word is out, Taylor, 61, uses his platform to tell others to get checked, and urges female fans to apply gentle pressure on the men in their lives. “Give him a nudge, go get a test,” he tells 5 News. In a fight with cancer, time is precious. “Every minute is like an hour, every day is like a week,” he explains. “You really want to get the most out of life. And I’ve been very fortunate.
I’ve had so much in terms of living the dream.” (Info: billboard.com)

2023-01-07 | Kelly Clarkson and Ordinary World

Kelly Clarkson opened the Friday (Jan. 6) episode of her talk show with a cover of Duran Duran‘s “Ordinary World.”
Wearing a simple black dress and matching tights, the host extraordinaire sang, “Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue/ Thought I heard you talking softly/ I turned on the lights, the TV, and the radio/ Still I can’t escape the ghost of you/ What has happened to it all?/ Crazy, some’d say/ Where is the life that I recognize?/ Gone away” before launching into the track’s high-flying chorus.

Originally released as the lead single from 1993’s Duran Duran (The Wedding Album), the soft rock ballad shot to No. 1 on the Pop Airplay chart and also landed at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band’s biggest hit since their 1985 James Bond theme “A View to a Kill.”

Coincidentally, fellow American Idol alum Adam Lambert also recently unveiled his rendition of “Ordinary World,” from his upcoming album of covers, High Drama, set for release this February. (Info: billboard.com)
