2025-11-06 | The 40th anniversary of The Power Station

Two brand new reissues of The Power Station debut album.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of both The Power Station and their eponymous debut album, 4CD and 2LP’s sets are to be released on 23rd January 2026.

The 4CD set comes in clamshell packaging with a 12 page booklet containing a brand new interview with John Taylor and Andy Taylor with esteemed music writer John Earls. Disc one contains the remastered album, disc two single remixes, raw instrumentals taken from the original studio sessions and recordings from their Live Aid performance. Disc three and four are an unreleased live set from The Spectrum in Philadelphia on 21 August 1985 that has been remixed by Richard Whittaker.
The 2LP is on recycled black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve and contains the brand new remastered version of the original album alongside single remixes and the band’sir performance from Live Aid.

John Taylor - “It’s been so exciting to dive back into the Power Station project after all these years. We were an unusual crew, but we made a fantastic noise. Tony Thompson, the disco “clock” behind so many massive hits, turned out to be one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. Andy Taylor, my Duran Duran bandmate, was absolutely on fire. Robert Palmer (why isn’t this man in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?) was a brilliant songwriter, sonic stylist, and vocal powerhouse. And yours truly - just trying to keep up. It was a truly unique experience, and I’m proud of the work we created. I’m also super happy with this re-issue edition, which has been beautifully remastered with bonus tracks added, and a perfect refresh of the iconic artwork.”

The Power Station were a phenomenon of the mid-1980’s. They were initially formed in 1984 as a one-off project by Andy Taylor and John Taylor of Duran Duran to record a cover of T. Rex’s ‘Get It On’ with model and singer Bebe Buell. Enjoying the process of exploring a more rock sound, while chiming with the more funkier drumming of CHIC’s Tony Thompson, they came up with the concept of the group having a revolving singer.

Robert Palmer was invited to perform on ‘Communication’, after which he asked if he could add his vocals to ‘Get It On’. Palmer’s involvement soon put paid to that initial idea of revolving singers. They would go on to write and record their self-titled debut album, naming themselves after the studio in which they were working in New York. It was produced by Bernard Edwards of CHIC with informal assistance from Nile Rodgers.

Considering the band's foundations and its initial intentions, their success came as quickly as it did unexpectedly! The album was released in March 1985, charting at 12 in the UK and six in the US album charts. Its first two singles ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘Get It On’ reached 14 and 22 on the UK Singles Chart and six and nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 respectively.

Robert Palmer would only perform with the band live once (‘Saturday Night Live’, 16 February 1985) and would leave the band shortly after the album came out. They toured with Michael Des Barres who also performed with them for Live Aid (the recordings of which appear in both sets). Later that year the band would disband with Palmer releasing his seminal album ’Riptide’, John Taylor returning to Duran Duran and Andy Taylor pursuing a solo career. Tony Thompson remained an in demand drummer playing with Jody Watley, Madonna, Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie among others. Bernard Edwards would go on to be a renowned producer having also produced ‘Riptide’ he would also work with Diana Ross, Adam Ant, Rod Stewart, Jody Watley, Grayson Hugh, Air Supply, ABC and Duran Duran.

2025-10-23 | First-Ever physical album Dolby Atmos upgrade

According to news this week, "KiTbetter, the company reshaping physical music for the digital era, today announced a world first: the upgrade of a previously released physical album to Dolby Atmos® immersive audio. Duran Duran’s 2023 album Danse Macabre: De Luxe, originally issued in limited quantities as a KiTalbum in custom coffin-shaped packaging and described as “great ghoulish fun,” has now been upgraded to Dolby Atmos, giving fans a new way to experience the music with the album they already own. With limited quantities still available, Danse Macabre De Luxe continues to blur the line between the physical and digital, uniting art, technology, and timeless sound."

"The KiTalbum, KiTbetter’s hybrid physical-digital format, makes this possible," a statement reads. "Unlike traditional physical formats, a KiTalbum can evolve, update, and unlock new experiences for fans. One year after Danse Macabre De Luxe’s KiTalbum debut, KiTbetter has upgraded every existing copy to Dolby Atmos, demonstrating how physical-digital albums can continue to grow long after release. Similarly, bands could also release a new music video for a song on the album, share behind-the-scenes footage, and create more creative expansions to the album."

"For a band like Duran Duran, known for pushing musical and technological boundaries, this upgrade underscores their continued commitment to innovation."

Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran said, “Danse Macabre was born from a spontaneous decision to pull together a record which celebrated the madness and joy of Halloween. In doing so, we unlocked an unexpected box of curiosity and creativity, which led us to reimagine some of our older songs, record cover versions of some of our favorites, and write several new pieces."

“This is what makes the KiTalbum so compelling to both artists and fans. It has the power to evolve, upgrade, and deepen the connection with an album people already own and love,” said Jennifer Sullivan, CMO and President, North America at KiTbetter. “By partnering with Dolby and Duran Duran, we’re proving that albums can be dynamic, living experiences that continue to grow in value over time.” (Info: musicconnection.com)

2025-10-01 | John Taylor sold his villa in L.A.

Nearly 30 years after buying their Hollywood Hills estate, Duran Duran bassist John Taylor and Juicy Couture co-founder Gela Nash-Taylor have officially closed the chapter on their longtime home in Outpost Estates. The couple purchased the 1930s Spanish-style villa in 1999 for $2 million, shortly after tying the knot, and spent decades carefully restoring and updating the historic residence. Now sold for $7.8 million, the deal marks a stylish exit from one of L.A.’s most architecturally significant and celebrity-favored neighborhoods. The 6,282-square-foot home features 4 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms, with standout details like chapel-style ceilings, a Juliette balcony, remodeled chef’s kitchen, custom library, home gym, outdoor kitchen, pool and spa, plus a fire pit lounge for entertaining under the stars.

2025-08-21 | Duran Duran stumbled into the 90s - album LIBERTY

During Behind the Music's successful run on VH1, viewers quickly noticed a pattern in the stories the show told. Every act started from obscurity, worked hard, made it big, and then became victims of their own success, bottoming out for a period before the (at least somewhat) uplifting final act.

It got to be pretty funny after a while, but it really wasn't the show's fault — it's just that a whole lot of artists follow the same basic career arc.

The guys in Duran Duran, for example? During their first decade and change, they followed it to a T.

After breaking big with their self-titled 1981 debut, Duran Duran owned the pop charts for the next several years, earning multi-platinum success with 1982's Rio and 1983's Seven and the Ragged Tiger, each of which peaked inside the Top Ten. But after recording three albums in three years, touring regularly, and enjoying all the fruits of their labor, they started to pull in different directions and experiment with side projects.

A combination of exhaustion and creative tension led to the departures of guitarist Andy Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor, which reduced the group to a trio for 1986's Notorious. That album, co-produced with Chic's Nile Rodgers, reflected the more R&B-influenced direction they'd started trending toward, which continued with 1988's Big Thing.

While each of those albums were successful in their own right, neither sold quite as well as the group's first three LPs. Duran Duran were still pop stars, but the growing impression was that their star was fading.

Their next album, 1990's Liberty, didn't help. At all.

On paper, the period leading up to Liberty's release was full of signs pointing to a possible creative rebirth. After serving as sidemen for extended periods, guitarist Warren Cuccurullo and drummer Sterling Campbell were formally added to the lineup, with Cuccurullo in particular adding a fresh voice to the songwriting mix.

There was also the sense that after finding different modes of expression in their various side projects, the group's core trio had found a way to blend everything into a happy whole.

"We don't feel confined, which is relevant to the album," vocalist Simon Le Bon told the Associated Press. "I think that's why we call it Liberty. I wanted to do things that I could do in Arcadia and in Power Station, but I want to do them in Duran Duran. This is better than anything we can do ourselves."

All that optimism, however, only papered over an unavoidable creative malaise. Writing new songs wasn't a problem — in fact, they ended up with far more than they needed — but finding a consistent focus proved difficult. Working with co-producer Chris Kimsey, they ended up with an 11-track LP that wholeheartedly embraced the synthy sounds of its time, but amounted to a handful of highlights that were outweighed by subpar fluff.

"I was not a happy camper when we were making Liberty," bassist John Taylor admitted years later. "Especially by the time we went into the recording studio. I wasn't strong enough to leave then. I mean, all I could do at that point was hang on by the skin of my teeth. When we were rehearsing it, when we were writing it was gonna be a great album. I really felt it was gonna be a great album. When we got in the studio, I fell apart and the production just wasn't right. It turned out to be a very mediocre album."

Upon Liberty's August 20, 1990 release, critics generally agreed. "You'd think it was good if Duran Duran refused to change with the times, so that their white trash, funky pop would still stand out amid the dross. But life's not that simple," wrote critic Michele Kirsch for Select in a typical review. "This is exactly what they've done and it's crap."

Of course, Duran Duran's relationship with music critics was never of supreme importance. What really mattered was the fans — and most troublingly, that relationship had also clearly frayed. Liberty peaked at No. 46, then a career worst for the group, and only eked out one charting single: "Violence of Summer (Love's Taking Over)," which sputtered out at No. 64.

The shifts in the band's lineup and their changing sound likely had something to do with this. But from within, it also felt like they were perceived as lightweights, particularly after the surge in socially conscious rock that emerged in the mid-'80s. John Taylor pinpointed Live Aid — which was, somewhat ironically, the last time the original lineup would play live for many years — as the moment they started losing their grip on the zeitgeist.

"From then on you had to have a social conscience, and we represented '80s decadence," Taylor reflected in a 1993 interview with Details. "After Live Aid it was like: U2 in, Duran out. It was that simple."

For all these reasons, Liberty's release marked a low point in Duran Duran's career — an impression that only deepened when the band declined to tour in support of the album, opting instead to head directly back to the studio and continue working on the outpouring of new material that started during the Liberty sessions. Ultimately, this ended up working in their favor.

Three years after Liberty flopped, Duran Duran returned with their seventh studio LP, a self-titled effort commonly referred to as The Wedding Album. It returned the group to the American Top Ten for the first time since Seven and the Ragged Tiger, went platinum, and gave them one of their biggest all-time hit singles in "Ordinary World," kicking off a second act that continues to this day. Various highs and lows have followed, but in hindsight, Liberty remains the last stone in the road during a very volatile period.

Looking back, the band members seem to agree that although it isn't without its share of standout songs, they missed what they were going for with the record. Still, like any chapter, it needed to be finished before the next one could begin.

As Rhodes later put it, "John and I have one thing in our whole oeuvre we feel we really got wrong, and that’s the Liberty album."

"I think the issue with Liberty is that we were in a transition and there were some tracks that didn’t have our whole heart in it. The album came at a difficult time, when a lot of the world was saying, 'We don’t want any more Duran Duran, we’ve had enough of you.' Of course, we refused to go away," Le Bon explained. "I wouldn’t go back and change anything, though. I’d rather spend two weeks writing a new song than making changes to Liberty. t was a point in time for Duran Duran. I really do look back on Liberty with a lot of fondness." (Info: ultimateclassicrock.com)

2025-08-11 | Simon Le Bon’s life nearly ended 40 years ago

Simon Le Bon’s life nearly ended 40 years ago when his yacht capsized, leaving him and five crew members stuck inside the upturned boat for 40 minutes.

An avid sailor since youth, the Duran Duran singer was aboard his 78-ft. maxi-yacht, named Drum, competing in the Fastnet yacht race, a 608-mile trek in southern England, when the keel of the boat broke off the hull. Eighteen crew members were able to get atop the hull, but the lives of Le Bon and five others were in peril, as an air pocket inside the overturned boat was all that kept them alive. Still, their lungs filled with a mixture of diesel fumes and battery acid.

"That was when I looked into the eyes of death," he would later tell the BBC of Aug. 11, 1985.

After his rescue, Le Bon struggled with the events of that day.

“About two or three days after it happened, I broke out into this rash, all over my chest, and all over my arms. I am sure it was a stress-related thing. I just couldn’t sleep, because I was asleep when the keel went,” he told CNN in 2018.

Much of the incident was on video, as the race was being filmed. For the next 31 years, though, the "Hungry Like the Wolf" singer avoided watching anything related to the capsizing. But he finally watched his rescue in 2016 for the first time for a BBC documentary.
"It's the most dangerous situation I've ever been in,” he told the BBC.

During the water rescue, Le Bon’s pants got caught on something, forcing him to take them off underwater. Footage of him being hoisted up into a helicopter in his underwear was shown around the world. "I got winched off into the helicopter and one of the guys called 'Hey Simon, where's your pants?' because I was just stood there in my knickers,” he recalled, now finding some humor in the situation. “There’s me … a rock star in his underpants.”

That day on the water, which happened just a month after the iconic pop-rock band performed at the legendary Live Aid festival, was “life-changing,” the Englishman admitted.
“But we all have life-changing experiences. It was a particularly well-publicized one. That’s the big difference,” he said. “People trip over a curb and it could be life-changing. These things happen. It’s just part of being human, we all go through these things.” (Info: people.com)

2025-07-13 | Live Aid (40th Anniversary)

Today, July 13th, marks exactly 40 years since Duran Duran headlined one of the biggest concerts in music history – Live Aid. Duran Duran played at the JFK Stadium, Philadelphia.
Setlist : A View to a Kill · Union of the Snake · Save a Prayer · The Reflex.

Here’s 10 facts about the history of Live Aid that you might not know already.
1. 1.5 billion people watched Live Aid in 1985 including the 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London and 89,000 people at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia.
2. More than 70 artists and bands performed over 16 hours of live music across the London and Philadelphia concerts.
3. Although there was a huge number of artists involved, Live Aid was organised in just a few months.
4. Many of the artists that were announced in the press conference hadn’t been booked for Live Aid.
5. Bob Geldof never said ‘give us the f**king money’. He appealed to the people watching, saying: ‘Take the money out of your pocket. Don’t go to the pub tonight please, stay in and give us the money. There are people dying now so give me the money.’
6. The Band of the Coldstream Guards, one of the best-known bands of the British army, were the first to perform on the day in Wembley. They started Live Aid with the Royal Salute to welcome the Prince and Princess of Wales.
7. David Bowie and Mick Jagger were planning to perform a transatlantic duet, with Bowie performing in London and Jagger in Philadelphia.
8. To fit all the acts into the 16-hour schedule, a special revolving stage was constructed.
9. The last act at Wembley before the finale performance of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ was Paul McCartney.
10. Live Aid raised L40 million on the day, which is the equivalent of over L100 million today, which was then used to provide relief of hunger and poverty in Ethiopia and the neighbourhood thereof.

2025-03-21 | Malcolm Garrett

"It was a real thrill for John and I to attend a small, yet perfectly formed exhibition tonight in London, to celebrate our dear friend Malcolm Garrett and the remarkable design work he did for Duran Duran over the first five years of our career. He created a visual language for us which defined so much about the future of our band and our brand. We are eternally grateful and several decades later it is reaffirming to know that as young kids just starting out, we did make some great decisions. Viva Malcolm!" (Info: duranduran.com)

2025-02-07 | Danse Macabre: De Luxe Bonus LP

RELEASE DATE: 2025-04-12
LABEL : BMG
FORMAT: LP

DANSE MACABRE: DE LUXE - Bonus LP contains 7 songs previously only available on vinyl via the expansive DANSE MACABRE: DE LUXE box set. Now, those 7 tracks are available on a standalone LP for the first time – and what better way to celebrate than with a special zoetrope keeping in the theme of the instant-classic Halloween-themed DANSE MACABRE?

3 of these tracks have been released digitally, on CD, and in the box set: an instrumental called “Masque of the Pink Death,” a cover of ELO’s “Evil Woman,” and “New Moon (Dark Phase)” featuring former Duran Duran member Andy Taylor (which is a reimagined cover of their classic song “New Moon On Monday” from their album Seven and The Ragged Tiger). The other 4 tracks are vinyl exclusives, now available on a standalone LP for the first time: “Spooky” (a cover of the Classics IV song performed by The Brides of Duracula), “Instructions for a Séance” (a spoken-word track from Nick Rhodes), and “The Visitor” and “Dialogues of the Dead” (two original instrumentals). This is a can’t-miss piece for Duran Duran fans and completists as well as Halloween enthusiasts. (Info: recordstoreday.co.uk)
